the worst game i never played

This past weekend I had a chance to play Karaoke Revolution and Guitar Hero. Two awesome games, perfect for parties! Which is where I played them.

Today I went searching for a new interesting game to play on my PC or MacBook. I found EA’s DefJam Icon. DefJam has a lot of amazing artist so I got excited. I imagined the game would let me mix their songs like a DJ, perhaps create mashups and upload them to a central server? That would be awesome. No, instead its a fighting game. What the hell are these people thinking?

Recent changes in the royalties webcasters must pay to record labels makes me wonder how long the record industry will survive. Its eatings its young! One day, hopefully soon a major record label will make the jump and treat their customers like customers, not thieves and the record industry will be turned upside down. I thought EMI was going to do it, but it doesn’t look like it.

The record industry has a unique characteristic which can best described as immoral and disorganized. Its talented pool of artists that generate billions of dollars in record sales don’t see any of the $$$ and have to resort bankruptcy filings to get out of slimy contracts. Consumers are fed up paying $15 for cds where the artist does not share any of the upside. Lastly, the industry has resorted to lawyers (RIAA) to hunt down their grandmothers and little sisters and brothers for improperly copying cds. This is an industry ripe for change and artists that work hard to perfect their craft are probably more than willing to embrace a new platform that ensures that they get a fair share of the profits.

Oh man, that game came through test when I was working at Sony this year and it was pretty terrible. The game mechanics are pretty screwed up and it is basically a button-mashing contest. The only thing that it really has going for it is the soundtrack and the graphics, both of which are pretty slick.
