If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
I’ve sent out all the invites to those pre-registered. If you pre-registed and haven’t received an email from me (ejovi AT gather.at) then check your spam or junk mail folders it might be there.
Lots of bugs discovered. Hope to have them resolved by the end of the week. We can only fix the bugs that are brought to our attention, so if you run into an error, please tell me about it!
If you haven’t pre-registered but know me, just drop me a note and I will invite you personally.
Also, are you a ruby on rails developer? Know someone that is? We could really use the help.
OK. There were a few very frustrating false starts. I was concerned that with all the hiccups we might have lost some momentum. I know I personally felt really bummed out that things weren’t moving at the speed I’d expected it to. But thats fine, the site is running now, I hope to have all the FAQ’s and HOWTO’s online soon. Its not very complicated at all, signup, import your friends, organize and event and yours friends will receive a notice when you have an event. Simple. Building it…not so simple.
Everyone should be receiving an invite today/tonight. Please check your SPAM/Junk mail folders if you do not receive it by tomorrow morning.
Comparison Engine has a good write up about things to consider if you are planning on using Google Checkout for your website…if you have no idea what Google Checkout is, its worth learning about and understanding why it could be bad for most businesses.
While in Chicago I met with Asuka Ishibashi (石橋 明日香石橋明佳) who is the Suzy Orman of Japan. She started out as a day trader after working for an investment bank made a lot of money trading and then went on to write a ton of books on investing, especially investment guides for women in Japan and now she serves on an a government economic committee, appears on TV regularly and has her own hedge fund. Amazing amazing person.
Without a doubt Asuka has had to overcome a lot of challenges to get to her position in society in Japan, but I didn’t ask her about that. I’m not really sure why. But I heard some guy compliment her on being able to achieve so much in such a male dominated society. She responded with an awkward grin. It reminded me of when people would congratulate me on accomplishing so much as a minority in America or having grown up in poverty. I had that same awkward grin.
There are rules to success in any society. If we learn those rules I think almost anyone can succeed. Learning the rules does not mean following them. It just means understanding them. For Asuka I assume she made a lot of money day trading (I read somewhere she made $1M in one year), was there a rule that said women can’t day trade in Japan? Was there a rule that said minorities can’t work in computer security? So do we really need to be congratulated for doing something we always had the right and freedom to do?
Gather.at is ready and emails will be going out later today. I’ll be spending my morning trying to populate the villages with content on relationships so I encourage you, once you join to add your picture and start contributing to the villages. And you can invite your friends if you’d like. Without friends organizing gatherings the site is sort of useless.
