FON Security and Traveling
I just landed in San Francisco airport. I’ll be in San Francisco until Wednesday morning for business. Right now I’m waiting for Juantomas, FON’s CTO to arrive at the airport. I figured while I’m waiting I should try to blog a little.
I forgot to mention that I wrote a fairly detailed post about FON and wireless security on the the FON blog. In many ways FON helps improve the security of wireless access points that want to share but are worried about being hacked.
The comments about the Community FON have been very helpful. The link to the FON wireless security post should answer the security question. Another thing I should clarify is that we aren’t giving away free internet to these low income areas, we are only giving access points to people who already have internet. But the issue of what people will actually do with the access points seems to be very important. So perhaps the best strategy is to partner with local businesses and community groups instead?

I am a network instructor in Sylmar California. I think my students would enjoy hearing about fon and perhaps setting up fon networks in the San Fernando Valley through local community groups like Pueblo y Salud. Can you provide me with information to keep the idea alive?
Thanks
Eric

Thanks Eric, I’m working on a package to help community groups deploy FON networks. Will have it done next week I hope.

Well, I think, FON take security more serious. At the moment, I have doubt if they care at all.
