Ejovi, I couldn’t agree with you more. I have spent 11 years working with technology, and most of the people that I have come in contact with are very smart, but there really was never any time connect with them and discuss how we as technology professionals can try and bring more services to not just minorities, but to the poor as well. I would be interested in being a part of something like that. I have been thinking of starting a blog or Yahoo! Group that could start as a networking/meeting spot for us to connect and try to work together on this. When I get it up and running, I will let you know.

I am from Rural South Georgia, and there is a need for poor people to gain access to technology because in my career I have seen poor children take to tech as a duck to water, and they even manage to find new ways of using MS Powerpoint or searching for information on the Net. We can reach more if we all can come together first, then work together.

I also believe that this type of an effort is very important. Especially due to the shrinking manufacturing base in the US. People who aren’t technically astute will be forced to re-educate themselves or become alienated. Connect the disenfranchised with the gift of tech.

This could be pretty valuable, I think. I wonder the demographics are on minority techs in the States. That’s something I’d definitely be a part of.

interesting…i’ve seen small versions of it with nsbe, abest, & bdpa. but essentially doing a joint event like unity is for journalists is definitely a great idea that i can get beside. some sort of entrepreneurship special interest group.

I think that would be great. I used to be a reporter in Santa Ana, CA, where I spoke Spanish everyday and saw Black and Brown folks everywhere.

Once I joined the techworld, the only Hispanics I see at work or in the networking meetings are the janitors. And I just don’t see any blacks at all.

So it would be great to have a minorities in technology conference.

I’m actually about to launch a minorities in technology group here in San Diego, and was wondering whether any groups like that already exist?

I found this link as I came across your blog. Might want to get in touch with the organizers of this conference. This is definitely needed. I work in a creative agency in Manhattan. We get very few qualified black and hispanic folks. But those who are qualified become some of the most talented. Even as a white guy it is frustrating to realise how much untapped potential there must be out there in the country… its all a matter of finding a way to get technology, training, and mentorship to these kids.

I’m thinking of going to the NAACP website and see if they have any such conferences.
