I’ve been considering a trip to Sri Lanka. I have an idea for using technology to assist in the recovery efforts in Sri Lanka or at least to bring additional aide into the country. Part of my reason is to prove to my friend that technology could help in such situations.
My friend who is in the country now believes that government corruption has been rampant and much of the money being sent to government agencies usually ends up in the pockets of corrupt politicians.
My idea involved setting up a radio broadcast to perform investigative journalism using Podcasting. I want to help perform the initial broadcast and after two weeks or so enable locals to perform the broadcast themselves.
I wanted to do this before I went to Madrid but I need to take 4 weeks of immunizations before I can go to the country. So going before Madrid is not possible. But its an idea. Maybe someone else can run with it or give me feedback.

In March I will be spending time in Spain to participate in the International Summit on Democracy, Terrorism and Security. I’m really excited about the opportunity. The summit has invited experts engage heads of state and political leaders from around the world to discuss Democracy, Terrorism and Security.
The working group I will be a member of will deal specifically with Terrorism, Democracy and The Open Internet. The guidelines we will draft and the discussion we will have will be based around the idea that “some of the most violent terrorist groups have also been the most skilled in exploiting the advantages of the Internet.” While answering the question of “How can we stop them from abusing the opportunities of modern communications technology whilst preserving the advantages and freedoms it offers?”
My dear friend Stephanie, who is volunteering to help tsunami victims in Sri Lanka as I write this, would argue that we need to more people handing out rice instead of discussing how to hand rice out. But I think that policy development that results from an open discussion can actually change situations for the better. So that’s why I am really excited about going to Spain. If you can make it to Spain you should attend and participate in this event.

They say every startup should build an advisory board of top notch professionals and entrepenuers. I’m still in the process of building SecurityLab’s but the few I have right now are very good.
How do I know they are good? Well I just got off the phone with one. He’s a Former CEO of another security startup that recently raised several million dollars in funding. During our hour and a half conversation I told him about what I’m doing and what I want to do. He proceeded to pick me apart by explaining all the holes in my reasoning and why they exist. It was very depressing and difficult to listen to mainly because he was right!
While he didn’t shoot down my ideas he gently showed me the problems I might run into and forced me to check my assumptions. It was very tiring but at the end I got a shot of hope, a bit of encouragement and a lot of knowledge. Atleast I’m doing SOME things right. I think I need to go for a walk. My head hurts.

I have a evil tooth ache and no dental insurance. Its times like these I wish I was working for a big company. If you’ve sent me email over the past two weeks I most likely didn’t receive it. I’ve been having email problems up the whazoo. In addition to being the CTO of SecurityLab I am also the system administrator…its times like these I wish I was working for a big company.
On the road…
I’ve been on the road lately, Hawaii and Japan last month and Spain next month. I took this semester off from Harvard so that I could travel more for work. That was a really tough decision for me, business or school. Believe me when I say it was a really hard decision.
I feel really bad when I tell other people about it. Not many people can understand why I made the choice I did and they give me hell for it. So now I’ve stopped telling people (excluding yourself). Even though its only one semester I wonder if this is how college dropouts feel when they tell people they never completed college. Funny thing is when I told people I’ve never been to college before they gave me a certain level of respect, now they just think I’m a loser. Funny how that works.
