The other day I had a conversation with a Simson Garfinkel about my feelings regarding the digital divide. The digital divide in my opinion is simply a representation of the countries economic divide and we should look to solve our economic issues first.
I’ve been interested in doing more research on the topic of how technology plays a part in culture when Simson explained his thoughts on Generation Net, and how young people aren’t embracing technology as eagerly as most people thought they would.
He wrote an interesting article and he has a point. Just today I met a 21-year old girl who said to me “oh I hate computers, all I know is how to send email and print.” More and more it seems as though people use computers because they have to and not because they really want to.
It’s more common to hear people say “I need computer skills to get a job!” then “I want to learn how to use a computer because it’s cool!” Generation N should probably be called Generation S for Scared, scared of being left out.
Your thoughts?

Yesterday someone said to me “I keep getting hacked, I fixed the problem with my anti-virus software but I keep getting hacked.” After a bit of questioning, it became clear that he hadn’t heard about the Windows worm that’s spreading across the Internet causing more trouble then a Whitehouse Intern. So if you are running Windows here is where you can find the fix.
Now if my colorful analogy doesn’t convince you to download and install the security fix, maybe the story of Julian Green will, Mr. Green was framed by hackers who placed child pornography on his home PC.

This morning when I checked my email, I had 215 new pieces of mail in my inbox. Of the 215, 15 weren’t spam. Granted this is annoying, but I’ve taken it in stride. In all honesty receiving 200 pieces of spam a day is probably my fault.
I have had the same email address for nearly 5 years now. Over the last five years I’ve used my personal email address to post on mailing list, newsgroups, and of course my web site. To the “spambots” that crawl the Net I am the perfect target. Imagine a telemarketer with a million phone numbers that never change. The difference is that you can be removed from a telemarketers list; you cant from a spam list. Once you make it on a spam list, you’re in for life, sort of like the mafia.

What have I been up to?
Six months ago I moved to Boston for a job opportunity. After living in Japan I figured I could live anywhere. I don’t know how true that is but I’ve been managing.
In September I’ll start going to Harvard while working during the day. It will be tough but what isn’t?
And what about future books? Well I am currently working on three book proposals, two too many. One of the books is a technical book, which has the highest priority now. The other two, true crime and undecided genre, are developing ideas.
With the exception of my family, co-workers, email friends and other you will be the first to know if any of the proposals actually turn into a book. I promise. Hopefully at least one of these will work out. Unfortunately, two of them require extensive research so it will be a test of my time management skills.
What else is there to know?
