Wireless Hacking

Security focus had an interesting article on Wireless hacking the other day, it was interesting because it talked about a newer wireless technology called bluetooth and not 802.11b (which is common in wireless computers). Bluetooth is increasingly being embedded in cars, phones, and laptops.

“With a reach of about two meters, Bluetooth scanning isn’t going to pick up a laser printer in the office building across the street, but it might find targets in nearby pockets and purses. “If that two meters is on a train where you’ve got lots of people around you with laptops, cell phones and PDAs, that’s a lot of targets to go after,” says Whitehouse.”

This opens up an entire world of security issues. Imagine being in a city like Tokyo or Seoul, areas famous for cell phone and technology usage. You can pretty much predict what brand cell phone people on a train in Tokyo will be using since there are only one or two major manufacturers. This makes attack so much easier. Spammers could grab a users cell phone address book and spam their contact list, pranksters could make everyones phone ring at the same time. Plenty of interesting things you could do.
