Short stories for hackers: Free Warez
I remember when I first heard about Warez. Everyone was on the Internet shouting Free Warez! Free Warez! Naturally I thought to myself, who is this Warez character? I mean, obviously he was innocent, anyone doing a search on yahoo or altavista would come up with something like a billion Free Warez sites. So what was the deal?
What did this Warez guy do? Why was he arrested? Was it because he was Hispanic? Where was he now and more importantly where was he from. He must have been famous because I was finding Warez sites as far away as Romania and the Ukraine. Not even Kevin Mitnick had this much support.
I was intent on finding out more about his story, so I went into chat rooms on IRC and AOL looking for where I could find Warez, the hostility I received from people who didn’t support Warez was amazing. AOL cancelled my account twice for illegal activities! Is there no such thing as free speech, I thought to myself!
Eventually I found an underground movement of Warez supporters, people who have dedicated all of their free time and resources to spreading Warez’s message.
I’m still not sure what his message was, but I think it had something to do with free software.
I’ve since given up my search for Senior Warez. One can only assume the worst, that Warez was imprisoned in some country full of human rights problems. I fear that while trying to kill the Warez movement, they may have actually killed Senior Warez.
In the end we may never know what happened to him but I say long live Warez.

I never really knew Warez was actually a person.When I first heard about it , it was on AOL.I searched for it and about a million and one diferent things came up.And all the ones that i went to, I just implied that Warez just meant free software.So, of Warez is a actual person, i bow down to him.

Heh, very nice personification, I was never much of a “warez d00d”, just hung around #hack on dalnet a lot, found a great teacher, QuantumG, but he finally banned me from it, I must have been a bad student. Now looking back at the past, I’m glad I didn’t take the short cut in finding out my place in this world and what I’m fighting for. Forever we hack :). Peace.
