The Digital Divide Myth
There is no such thing as the digital divide. I hear the term used all the time, but it has this vague elusive definition that just doesn’t sit well with me. It’s often used to define the gap in technical knowledge and usage between the middle-upper class America and poorer often minority America. On one hand, it has also been used to define one of the evils that have come of our embrace of technology while on the other hand some argue that using technology could help bridge that gap.
These views are not only wrong, they are dangerous. If there is a digital divide then there is also a banking and investing divide, an expensive pets and watches divide and an aviation hobbyist divide. There are of course huge gaps in the subjects fore-mentioned but they are not gaps created or fueled by the subjects themselves. The gap is much like the gap in technology between the haves and have not, a financial one.

I really enjoyed my latest stay in Japan. I always learn something new about myself when I travel, when I feel I need to think and plan things out I try to go somewhere. Its not always as extreme as hitch hiking through the mountains of Japan sometimes its as simple as coffee in Paris. It wasn’t all so surprising that I decided to spend the New Year in Japan. I managed to get a lot of work done and I met a few people who have inspired me moving forward. For the first time I have a new years resolution that I have taken very seriously.
With my New Year’s resolutions and the fact that I’ll be turning 23 this month what I came away Japan with during this trip was a focus on who it is I want to be and how being that person will affect my work going forward. Who I want to be and the work I have done has not always been the same. In fact often times it has been quite an irony.
